Olympic Skateboard Series
I've recently started working on a new series of art skateboards inspired by skateboarding becoming an Olympic event in the 2020 Olympic games in Tokyo. The boards are created with oil paint and colored pencil - the same way I create my more traditional paintings. The big difference with painting on skateboards or panels as compared to canvas or linen has to do with the interaction of the medium and glazes on the substrate. Panels tend to allow me to incorporate the black gesso underpainting layer through the use of a more shallow paint layering whereas canvas tends to make the underpainting layers more opaque.
Another thing I started to look at with this series was specific color combinations. In the past I used complimentary and secondary colors and the combinations were very customized. This time around I thought it would be a good idea to restrict myself to only a few colors and let the compositions and qualities of the paint and application of paint be more of the focus of the attention.
